Improving road safety in Moldova
Road conditions in Moldova are rated among the worst in Europe and only 26 per cent of national roads are considered to be in good condition. Not only is there a need to improve Moldova’s road network, but road safety is also a concern. Against this background, the EBRD is investing €150 million to help Moldova upgrade its roads and €500,000 to improve road safety through road safety audits and by building capacity at the State Road Administration.
Civil society groups and organisations play a key role in promoting road safety. We are helping to deliver solutions to road safety issues by working in partnership with the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport. Together, we are raising awareness on road safety issues with about 100 local civil society organisations (CSOs), including residents and teacher associations, as well as taxi drivers and farmers. Workshops were offered in five different locations across Moldova between 2013 and 2014: Chişinău, Peresecina, Hinceşti, Leova and Congaz. Road safety training for CSOs in Moldova was funded by the government of Luxembourg.
