Making roads safe in Ukraine
Traffic and road safety has been a key concern for the EBRD in recent years. Our strategy on this issue combines a robust approach to due diligence and project monitoring, as well as using technical cooperation funds targeted at capacity-building in countries and sectors where it is likely to have the most impact. In 2014, working with the World Bank and the European Investment Bank, we supported a nationwide programme to promote road safety awareness in Ukraine and established a partnership with Concern Galnaftogaz, one of the largest petroleum distributors in the country, to help reduce road safety risks.
The key objectives of the ongoing programme are to identify the risks of road accidents following the rehabilitation of highways, and to address the needs of the most vulnerable road users among the communities located along major road corridors and the drivers using these routes. The project includes many awareness-raising and educational events and workshops for communities, state authorities and police in local villages and cities. The campaign is also widely publicised in the media and online, and will use petrol stations along the roads as informational hubs.
Meanwhile, the EBRD, together with other international financial institutions, continues to engage in policy dialogue with the state authorities to build institutional capacity, update national road safety standards and improve infrastructure design.
